Day 6 - The Joys of Youth

We began the morning as always, 10 laps around the pagoda. I arrived late, just as the others had finished, so completed the rounds alone. Then I joined in the line of kicking drills, and continued with them when the others turned to jumping or set handsprings on the concrete pavilion.

While the bigger boys learned their huge spear? Routine, we six lower lifers did my routine. 30 times, was Master’s wish. But he let us off easy after about 20. I was able to keep up, mostly, except for the last five moves or so. One boy calls out the cadence and we all react. He even liked to fool us, watching us do the next step although he had not told us to with „zo!“ I don’t speak Chinese, but I guess what he said was, „I did not tell you to go ahead with the next step!“

The afternoon session began once again with laps. I ran with the boys and soon found a couple in need of tying their shoes – on the backside of the pagoda, out of view of the Master. Ah, the joys of youth – and middle age. I soon joined them to show solidarity, tying one of the boy’s laces for him. Thank you, he replied.
Now that I had demonstrated my ability to perform the routine, what did Master have planned for me? He barked at me, held his hands up: five ten. 50 repetitions. No way, Jose. I managed at most a scant dozen.

Tourists come and mill around. Many like to photograph us performing our routines. This bothers me. I feel singled out not because I am practicing kung fu, but because I am a foreigner practicing kung fu. China is even more notorious than Japan in its desire to photograph the foreigner. I usually accept when someone wants to be in a photo with me. But – as was the case the other day in the cafeteria – when I am eating lunch and someone wants to photograph the monkey using chopsticks, I balk. Thank Buddha that a monk intervened before the woman could release the shutter. And so today, as on a few previous occasions, I interrupted my routine to avoid the tourists‘ prying camera.

When the others departed, I gathered my bag and jacket, but Master pointed me back to my place on the pavillion. Two, his fingers read. Not sure what that meant, I did two more repetitions, waited until the coast was clear and left the arena.

Day 5 - Master loco?

This morning Dao-yi taught me a few more steps. My body is doing good, almost back to normal. I join in the kicking drills. But I skip the standing long jump and jumping while bringing the knees to the chest. Later, Master tells me to join in the routine with the younger boys. But I am not up to speed, and have to bow out before we are finished. 
 
I did not realize I was almost finished with the routine. This afternoon only one older boy was present and he taught me the rest of the routine. We were not clear about the final step, so Master showed us, but he changed it from what the boy was doing. So the boy gave me the sign that the Master was loco en la cabeza, twirling his finger near his head. 
 
Other boys came, but the Master had gone. I practiced a few more times, videoed myself so as not to forget overnight, and after the other boys left at 4 pm, so did I.

Day 4 - A Miracle

My legs are doing much better. Still aching, but at least i can walk without wincing. Dao-yi told me to join in the group exercises, but I told him I wanted to run around the Buddha a few times. I simply was not up to doing kicking exercises. Master Li told me to do my routine 30 times. I did not do it quite so many, but with each repetition, it got easier and I could move better. 
 
Then the master incorporated me into the group rehearsal of Shao Hung Chung, and they stopped when they got as far as I could go. Then another time or two, before Dao-yi gave me further instruction. The master said a few words to me about one move, palm down! I guess it was. And as the group dispersed for lunch, Dao-yi stayed a while with me and we did a few more steps.
The mostly female group appeared again this morning. I think they are workers in the restaurant. Decked out in black peasant uniforms, like me, but with name tags, they did a few moves of some routine and then they were gone.
Another Westerner, who I saw yesterday, joined us in the courtyard with his own teacher and practiced another form. Don’t know the name of his routine.
Olga, the Russian, came, too. But she soon disappeared. She has been practicing a sword routine.

For the afternoon session only two Chinese students showed up, along with H and me. The older Chinese boy, Liu, showed me a few more steps. The Master said, practice this routine 30 times, so your body will react automatically. So I practiced a bit, rested, and tried the routine again. At one point he personally instructed me how to place my elbow. I did it as instructed and he gave me a half smile of acceptance.
The late afternoon sun burned the patio orange.Then something startling happened. Master praised me! He said I was doing better than many of the young students who had been there for years! Probably because my mind isn’t cluttered with learning kanji. Praise is always good. To top it off, he actually smiled, a full teeth-bearing smile! I felt like caressing his shaven head.
Then he took out the pendant that he wore around his neck from beneath his garment. It was perhaps carved from a blue-green stone. He held it long up to the sun and admired it. This is what a former student had given him. Does he expect the same from me?

He asked me my age. And I asked him his. I am three years his senior. He has been at Shaolin less than a decade. Apparently monks move from temple to temple. His father and grandfather were also at Shaolin. Each monk has his own particular way of performing the steps in any routine. Only four monks at Shaolin teach kung fu. I don’t know the total number of students or monks.

Day 3 - Master takes a siesta

My body really aches. In the morning, lying in bed, I fear moving my legs for the ache. It is the thighs that hurt the most. All the squatting trains the quads. I should really take it easy. I could seriously injure myself. What then?
The morning progresses with the warm-up exercises, kicks and jumps. I skip these and concentrate on my routine. I want to rest my legs as much as possible.

Afternoon session begins with four students and no master. It ends with eight students and no master. Is this what I paid for?

Day 2 - Where's Master Si?

I went to bed at 7 pm last night. Really knackered, under the weather. Up at 5:45 when the wake-up call sounds from the adjacent school. My body aches but not too badly. Did an hour of yoga before arriving at the temple.
Morning session: after the ten laps around the pagoda, I practice the steps I learned yesterday. I am getting more fluid in my movement, but I need something new today. 
 
Music streams into the pavillion. It is easy listening. My mind hears „Blue Eyes.“The morning session finishes about 10:30. Another group of youngsters came to our pavillion and was filmed by CCTV. They filmed me, too. In the next days I will be the subject of many a Chinese tourist’s photo.

During the afternoon I learn a few more steps of my routine. From Dao-yi. But where is the master?

Day 1 - Where's the rigour?

Master Si told me to arrive at 8:30, though I would not train until 9. It is 8:45 and the gate to his pavilion is locked. Tourists begin to fill the temple grounds. A caretaker sweeps the patio.
Now one monk unlocks the gate. We begin with 10 laps around the pagoda. One lap takes about 60 short strides. After that, and a few minutes of leg stretches, we begin with leg kicks. Standing in line, we all wait our turn. One after the other, we traverse the ten meters with about four or five kicks, now towards the front, then towards the side. Then we are on to frog leaps. Or jumping, lifting knees to chest. Or roundhouse kicks, but always with the right foot. Why not alternate?
While the master is preoccupied with a visitor, the pupils cheat on their exercises, skipping a kick or two, doing them with less enthusiasm, or even hiding behind one of the many stellae in the courtyard. Dao-yi punishes that boy with dozens of squats with hands behind the head. But kids will be kids, and the desire to play while the cat is away reminds me of my childhood. Perfectly understandable, but the standard of the temple training I had imagined quickly fades.

Master disappears after 30 minutes, leaving Dao-yi to instruct me. He is 17 years old and by far the best athlete. He shows me the first steps of the Shao Hang Chuan routine, or small red boxing. Watching him perform some kicks is a real pleasure. One movement is from a sidewards position, bringing the forward leg high, foot reaching behind the head, arms snapping from straight out to folding over the head as the foot rises. Then snapping back again. In a flash, Dao-yi’s leg snaps up and back to earth. Amazing.

As the afternoon wears on, the boys gain a bit of confidence around me and begin saying simple things in English: Go! What time is it? Where you from? When I answer America, no one seems to understand. USA. Still no sign of understanding. LA. Nope. I look in my phrasebook. Meiguo. Ah, yes!

The afternoon session officially runs from 2:30 to 5 pm. But some friends of the master come at 3:30 and so that pretty much releases us from doing the exercises. The kids spend the rest of the time fooling with their halbards. I practice the few steps I know.
